What is MSME or SSI?

Msme in India started in the year 2006. In fact, there are still some service areas which were not yet included in this sector, the definition of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises was incorporated to make the act a historic change. The Government has, therefore, now simplified the online registration of MSMEs with paperless work, to take advantage of this sector.

The benefits of MSME registration include priority sector lending, electricity tariff subsidy, capital investment subsidy and excise duty and direct tax exemption. The conditions required to be fulfilled for qualification under the MSME Act are as follows.

  • All the manufacturing enterprises which have invested less than 10 crores in machinery and plant are allowed to be registered as MSME.
  • In service enterprises, the investment in plant and machinery should not be more than 5 crores.
  • And in near future, if your enterprise exceeds the maximum limit, then it will not sum up as MSME.

What Are The Different Types of MSMEs?

There are 3 types of MSME or SSIs which can be classified as under:

1. Micro Enterprises

Micro enterprises are the smallest institutions, of course. Under micro manufacturing enterprises, the investment in plant and machinery should be less than Rs 25 lakh, while micro service enterprises should not exceed the investment of Rs 10 lakh.

2. Small Enterprises

In small manufacturing enterprises, investment should be between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 5 crore in plant and machinery, while in small-service enterprises, the investment is between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 2 crore.

3. Medium Enterprises

And if we talk about medium manufacturing enterprises, the investment should be between Rs. 5 crores and Rs. 10 crores in plant and machinery and for small service enterprises it should be between Rs. 2 crores and Rs. 5 crores.

Benefits of MSME / SSI Registration

There are multiple benefits of MSME / SSI registration for small businesses:

  • Cheaper bank loans : The rate of interest on loan offered to MSMEs is 1-1.5% lower compared to typical business loan interest.
  • Quicker approvals from state and central government bodies : Business registered under MSME are given higher preference in terms of government license and certification.

However, there is no obligation to get the msme registration, but it is always advisable to do so as it provides a lot of benefits to the enterprises registered under the MSME Act. This will give you a lot of unconveniences later. After you assign the provisional MSME certificate and you can start with your production and even apply for a permanent certificate which will add more benefits for you. Always apply for provisional registration at an early stage of the business.

As stated above, SSI/industry The MSME registration is totally voluntary. Traders and entrepreneurs usually do this to use the benefits provided under it. The registration process is quite easy and simple. You can easily avail of it (provided you have a manufacturing plant or a commercial location where you provide services), many businesses opt for it on other registrations.

It is advisable to get a temporary SSI Registration certificate (PRC) before starting your campaign in your enterprise. The PRC will work for you smoothly and will assist you in obtaining special clearances and approvals from the regulatory bodies.

If your business or enterprise is listed under schedule-III of Industrial License waiver notification, you can easily apply for the PRC without an industrial license. Other units must first obtain an industrial license. All clearances should be obtained by the enterprise, whether statutory or administrative. For instance, drug control orders are required to be licensed under the drug controller order. PRC is issued on the basis of application form. No terrestrial enquiry is conducted.

Verification of a PRC is for 5 years and if the unit is still not under operational then you can still re-apply for it. As you start with your operations, you can easily apply for a permanent license.
